Can't close Word

"Cannot close Word until send mail command is finished. Switch to the New
Message first and either send or close the message" (using office 2000) Went
to Outlook and tried to delete any "message" Outlook is showing error
"Unable to connect to server". How can I close Word to shut down my
computer???
