Can't copy between 2 Word Applications

I have MS Word v4 (for DOS) and MS Word 97 both installed on my computer. I
can't use the "copy to clipboard command" on v4, to paste into Word 97. The
clipboard only works within v4. Also, when I open documents (filename.doc)
created in v4 into 97, it comes up as boxes and gobbledegook. I used to use
both these programs with Windows 98 and had no problem whatsoever. I have
even tried the compatibility option (run as Win98) for both, but that doesn't
help.
Look, I know it's weird to be using such an old version of Word, but my
husband likes it. I just don't understand why the 2 versions don't talk to
each other on XP the way they did on 98. Can anyone help? I'm just at my
wit's end.

I'm pretty sure that the problem is that the overall clipboard is a Windows
thing, not a Word thing. In recent versions, a supplemented version is a
part of Office 2000 and later - and thus Word. When Word 4.0 was out, there
was no clipboard outside of Word unless you were running Windows.

You should be able to save a Word 4.0 document, open it in Word 97, and cut
and paste from within Word 97. Not sure about saving to something that could
be read by Word 4.0. If you copy something in Word 97 to the clipboard, does
it work trying to paste into Word 4.0?
