can't create a Data File

I have installed Outlook 2003 on an XP laptop.
Before the installation I uninstalled the trial version of Outlook 2007.
When I start Outlook it gives me the following error message: "Unable to
open your default e-mail folders...To add a date file...double-click the Mail
icon in Control Panel".
I try to "Add" a new data file using the Mail applet but I get the following
error message: "An unknown error occured, error code: 0x80070002".
I've tried to create a new Profile using the Mail applet and I get the
following error message: "There was an error locating one of the items needed
to complete this operation. It might have been deleted".
Does anyone have an explanation and a solution to this problem?

Describe exactly how you're trying to create the new profile and exactly where
in the process you get that message.

Sorry it's taken so long to reply but I've been having trouble getting this
forum to respond. Thanks for being patient.

The steps I'm taking to create the pst file:
1. From the Start Menu, open Control Panel
2. Double-click 'Mail'
3. From the 'Mail Setup-Outlook' window that appears, I click on the 'Data
Files' button.
4. On the 'Outlook Data Files-Outlook' window that appears I click on the
'Add' button.
5. Error message appears: 'An unknown error occured, error code:
0x80070002'. Press 'OK' button.
6. A new window opens called 'New Outlook Data File'. It has a empty list
called 'Types of storage'. Press 'OK' button.
7. Error message appears: 'An unknown error occured, error code:
0x8000ffff'. Press 'OK' returns me to the window in step 6.

did get created. It's now listed.
9. Select the 'Outlook' profile in the list and click on the 'Properties'
button.
10. 'Mail Setup' window appears. Click on 'Data Files' button.
'Outlook Data Files' window opens.
11. No data files listed. Click on the 'Add' button.
12. Error message appears: 'An unknown error occured, error code:
0x80070002'. Press 'OK' button.
13. A new window opens called 'New Outlook Data File'. It has a empty list
called 'Types of storage'. Press 'OK' button.
14. Error message appears: 'An unknown error occured, error code:
0x8000ffff'. Press 'OK' returns me to the window in step 13.

I've managed to create 4 profiles with different names but can't create any
pst data files. Still can't open Outlookbeyond the error message in my first
post.

Are you on a corp network where the admin may have pst file disallowed? If
not, did you try uninstalling, rebooting, then reinstalling office 2003?

What I'd do in this case is to open Regedit, locate
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
Messaging Subsystem\Profiles, export that key, then delete what's under it.
I'd then try creating a new profile with the Mail applet to see if the
deletion made any difference.

Hello Diane,
My laptop is my personal one at home not my work laptop. Could the
manufacturer have set the option to disallow pst creation?
I've uninstalled, rebooted and reinstalled Office a couple of times before I
tried this forum. All the other Office programs work just fine though.

No, its highly unlikely that anyone besides the admin or you would do that.

Just in case, check the registry for the DisablePST key. If it exists, its
at
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Outlook\

Googled this and found something about downgrade if outlook 2007 to outlook
2003 causing this and solution was to rename mapisvc.inf and next time
outlook recreates the profile this file gets recreated.
Not sure if this will work but worth a try.
Mapisvc.inf found at either c:\windows\system32 or c:\program files\common
files\system\msmapi
Do update in the status..

 

[outlook error]

I currently have outlook 2007 which worked fine then all of a sudden an error
code that reads 0x8007002 keeps showing and now I can't send or recieve.
