Can't create footnote in Word 2002

I am running Word 2002 under WindowsXP Home Edition.

Whenever I try to create a footnote in a document, I get an error
message that reads "Start At must be between 1 and 16383 for this
format."

Since I have already set Start At to 1, and the number format is "1,
2, 3...", , this message is puzzling.

Any help would be most appreciated.

try a maggie of the document - cuttenpaste everything bar the last
para mark in each section to a new doc.

Then retry.
