Can't create new Table of Figures styles

E

Eric

(Word 2000) I want to create new styles for Tables of
Figures. I go to Insert>Index and tables>Tables of
figures>Modify to display the Styles dialog. There is only
one style showing: Table of Figures. The New button is
greyed out. Only the Modify button is active.

WordHelp talks about selecting the style you want. I'd
like to but how do I create new ones?

You can't create a new ToF style. But you can certainly change it. And
possibly you can create any new style and assign the ToF (which is
actually a TOC field) to use this new style, but since I have never done
this, you better read up the help on TOC field code ...

Create a new numbered style, insert "Table [SPC]" or
"Figure [SPC]" in front of the number, and insert the
separation character (if used) and a [TAB].

Here are my table and figure caption styles.
TableNum produces "Table n (caption text)"
FigNum produces "Figure 1 (caption text)"
