Can't cross-ref to new heading style - no TOC entry, either

I created a new style that serves as a section heading, but it is not labeled
with the word “Heading.†I want to be able to cross-reference to these
section headings, and for them to show up in the TOC. How can I accomplish
this? (They don’t show up as a “Reference type†when I attempt to insert a
Cross-reference. I’ve tried to change the style name to include the word
Heading, but this doesn’t work.) I’m using Word 2002 on XP. Thanks!

If the style you created for your section headings is a numbered or outline
numbered style, you should see the paragraphs formatted with that style if
you select "Numbered item" as the reference type in the Cross-reference
dialog box. If the style is not numbered, you need to bookmark each section
heading - then select "Bookmark" as the reference type in the Cross-reference
dialog box and all your bookmark names should appear in the list.

Do you use the built-in heading styles for other purposes? If you need a lot
of cross-references to your section headings, it would be easier if you used
one of the built-in heading styles - then you would not have to create
bookmarks in order to cross-reference the items. You can modify the built-in
heading styles as you wish. See:
