Can't Customize Word X

J

Jeff Linder

I attempted to customize one of the toolbars in Word X for Mac Service
Release 1. However, upon closing the application I get the following
message: "Word cannot save changes to the global template because it was
opened with read-only access. Do you want to save the changes in a template
with a different name?" When I click OK, it automatically goes to "My
Templates." When I type a new name for the template (for example New
Normal.dot), the "SAVE" button remains greyed-out. So I cannot save a new
template. Any suggestions on how to correct this? All I want to do is
customize my toolbars. Thank you. -Jeff Linder ([email protected])

I see nobody answered this. OK, you need to get your Normal Template open
as a file. Close ALLL of your documents, then use File>Open in Word to open
the Normal template.

Check the title bar: it should NOT say "Read Only". If it does, you do not
have edit access to the folder it is in, which would lead to all manner of
problems.

If Normal template has opened in Edit mode, you can go ahead and make your
change: it will be saved normally.

If Normal has opened read-only, you need to make your change then Save As
under a new name. Word will direct you to the My Templates folder: I would
not try to change this, simply save the file.

Now quit Word, re-name your Old Normal template, then re-name the new
template to Normal and move it to the original folder.

Hope this helps
