Can't dactivate user

I have a user who has left the business. He was set to deactivated but now
shows as active. When I try to de-activate the user I get a message saying:

The NT account specified is invalid. Check the spelling of the user name,
verify that a valid domain name was included, and check that a duplicate
domain was not used.

The user has been removed from AD because they have left. How do I get rid
of this user?

Add user to AD, synchronize, deactivate him on MPS, deactivate him/delete
in AD.

This is the order in which it was done. Unfortunately because of SOX I
cannot get him setup again in AD. Any other ideas?
