Can't delete line

J

A document that I'm writing with pictures inserted has lines in it that I
cannot delete no matter what I do. Sometimes they will disappear only to
show up somewhere else.

Also, there are large gaps in the text that I cannot remove,

Any help here?

The lines are probably paragraph borders. See
http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/CantGetRidOfLine.htm for instructions.

The gaps could have any of a number of causes. Start by displaying
nonprinting characters, by clicking the ¶ button on the toolbar/ribbon. Do
any symbols appear in the gaps? If so, what are they? See
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/NonPrintChars.htm for explanations
of items that might be there.

If there is nothing visible in the gaps, even with nonprinting characters
displayed, look at these things:

- Click in the paragraph just above a gap. Open the Format > Paragraph
dialog. If there is anything other than zero in the Space After box, change
it to zero.

- Click in the paragraph just below a gap. Open the Format > Paragraph
dialog. If there is anything other than zero in the Space Before box, change
it to zero. Also click the Line & Page Breaks tab of the dialog and uncheck
the "Keep With Next" and "Page Break Before" boxes if they're checked.

- Open the page header pane, and then click in the area of the gap. Does an
empty rectangle appear? There might be a blank picture or text box anchored
in the header and floated into the position of the gap.

There are a few less common causes for gaps, but first eliminate these
possibilities.

I was finally able to delete the line by the technique suggested, but it took
forever. When I clicked on No Border, the line simply jumped up the document
a few lines and I had to select it again and click No Border. This went on
for about an hour before I was finally able to get rid of it altogether when
it reached the top of the document...I hope it doesn't again rear its really
ugly head!!

About the gaps: I did as was suggested, but no luck. Nothing worked, sorry
to report, but sure do appreciate your being there with ideas.

Appreciatively,

Craig

It's too late now, but you could have done all that in one step by
selecting all the paragraphs first, and then selecting No Border just
once.

I'm not sure what else to suggest about the gaps, but if you want to
mail the document to me I'll take a look.

Gaps - After using the previously mentioned methods, select the whole of the
affected paragraph/section, then press Shft+Spacebar. This removes any
manually applied formatting from the select area.

That would remove direct font formatting. To remove direct paragraph
formatting requires Ctrl+Q.

Good catch! Shift+Spacebar would just replace the text with a space!

Oops, :-(
Apologies jcraighj, hopefully you did not end up with spaces everywhere.
