Can't double click on an mdb file to start Access

L

Laurel

On two out of four computers at a school running my application, I can't
double click on an mdb file to open it. If I try that OR if I try to
associate .mdb with Access, I get this error:

Microsoft Office 2000 SR -1 Disk 2
(tries to look for disk for a while)
Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product Microsoft Office
2000 SR - 1 Disk 2.

Since this is a school environment, I need to deal with the bureaucracy to
update windows or office. Or is this an update I can get from the
internet? Can I be more helpful to them than simply sending the error
message?

The computers are Windows 2000 and one is running Access 2000 (9.0.3821
SR-1). The second is running Access 2000, but I'm not sure of the patch
numbers.

I doubt that this is an Access issue and believe it is probably a drive map
issue involving your network or security permissions....but just a guess

I have had this problem(not just with mdb's but doc and xls) with
windows/office 2000. the workaround is to tempoarily make the user the
administrator. double click a mdb/doc/cls and go through the install
process. Insert the Office disc asked for. Once this is done once go back
and change the user's security back to what it was.

this isn't a network problem

when MS Access is 'busy' it won't let you open another instance

There are 2 ways to get around this

a) startup MS Access and go file, open in order to open the application u
want to open
b) put a shortcut to MSACCESS.exe in your sendto directory; and then
right-click send to Access

why would you be running SR-1?

you need to patch ALL of your desktops I mean duh!

Because California school systems are last in line for money from the
gov't and usually don't get squat... I assume Washington isn't that way?

Duh. Read the posting. This is a school environment where I don't control
the patch levels. That's what this newsgroup is for, isn't it. Getting
help when you don't have the answer??????

I'm not sure what you mean by the /doc/cls?
It would make sense to follow your advice, but all I would know to do is
double click on an mdb file... ?

In Aaron's defense... Microsoft service packs are free of charge and will
download and install automatically if you use Windows Update.

What I meant was that I had this problem with Word, Access and Excel files.
I repeat
Change user security to administrator( you have to login as administrator)
Log in as user that is having problems
Double click on the Access mdb
You will be promted to insert the Office 2000 disc
Insert disc
after completing this update the db will open.

The problem should not happen again

Don't forget to change user security back

Don't get too upset about that poster who is disrupting this newsgroup, and
is trying to make life difficult for so many of us here. this person just
butts in, and gets everyone here in a tizzzz

Remember, all the people here are volunteers, and are not employed by
Microsoft. This is charity system were people who like helping the community
pitch in to help on another.

Another possible fix is to un-install, and then re-install office. (I
know..lousy suggestion..but, sometimes that seems to fix this problem). Note
that re-install is not what I am suggesting, but a un-install..and then a
re-install...

Albert,

I hope you are not referring to me.

No...not at all!!

It is the other guy running around telling us that mdb is only for
babies.....
(I am not using his name...since i filtered it out as much as I can..and
thus will not see my posts if I use his name!!!)

Albert,

Is there anyway to filter him out Outlook Express 6? It won't let me under
Message|Block Sender.

I am fully aware of that, John. However, if you're familiar with Calif.
school systems, you would know that teachers, IT people, [et al] within
the school systems are highly over worked and severely underpaid.

I really didn't mean to start a debate - I was merely ribbing Aaron for
giving an overworked school employee crap for not taking the time to do
updates.

Sorry for mentioning it.

why would you be running SR-1?

Because they use Outlook and don't want the mololithic Outlook
Attachments patch to block their access to attachments?

BTW, you don't need anything beyond SR-1 in Access 2000 to get a
stable copy of A2K, except Jet 4 SP6 or later.
you need to patch ALL of your desktops I mean duh!

Yes, but only to at least SR-1 and Jet 4 SP6 or higher.

If you don't know these things, it shows how completely ignorant you
are of the real ins and outs of running Access 2000.

And how unqualified you are to be making pronouncements about these
subjects.

(but, of course, anyone who was paying attention already knew that).

And you don't need anything beyond SR-1 to get a stable version of
Access 2000, except for Jet 4 SP6. But WinXP shipped with that or
later, and Win2K had it in SP2, so it's unlikely that any machine
will lack an appropriate Jet version.

The reason to avoid Office 2000 SR-2 or later is the monolothic
Outlook Attachments patch.

Your policy is perfectly logical for Access, and as an IT policy.
Access 2000 SR-1 is as stable as the later SRs (though those may
patch other problems in Access). As long as you're running Jet 4 SP6
or later, you have the earliest stable version of Access 2000
running. This is the minimum I require of customers running A2K
applications.
