Can't download/install Office Updates

T

TerryM

Hi,

I'm having strange problems with my Outlook and tried to update Office. I
was prompted to download SP 2, Office 2003 (KB907417) and a new junk mail
filter. After attempting the downloads, I got a message that 2 downloaded but
none were installed.

I followed the troubleshooting instructions, which included: deleting all
kinds of files in the temp folders, and that caused even more problems. When
I did that, my computer couldn't even scan for updates. So I undeleted them.

I tried turning off my virus protection and Black Ice fire wall. No go.
Any suggestions on how to allow for the download and installments?

Thanks!
Terry

Try for the fullfile download and see if that works. If it doesn't posting
the exact error messages and error numbers helps with troubleshooting.

Thanks, Millie.
I tried that as well, but it didn't work. Here is the sequence of events:

1. I open Outlook. Email is downloaded veeery slowly, if at all. Any other
open programs freeze or or slow down so that they are unusable.
2. Mail can't completely download. I get a message that says "Outlook has
encountered a problem and needs to send an error report". Outlook closes and
I'm prompted to say yes or no to sending an error report. I click yes.
Another box opens saying the problem has been reviewed and to click on a link
for a possible solution.
3. I click on the link and it takes me to windows. The suggestion is to
download Office updates.
4. I try to do that. Two download (SP is one). But they won't install. I
follow more links to try and resolve the problem.
5. I get another message that says: "Your system is low in virtual memory.
Windows increasing the amount of your virtual memory paging file. During this
process, memory requests for some applications may be denied".

I try all the fixes I can find at MS; None work:

- fullfile download, downloading one file at a time, clearing out temp
files, cache, cookies, etc. I can't even remember all the things I tried. I
did not attempt to change anything in the registry, though- that's beyond my
skills.

- I did go into web mail to see if that could be a problem. There were
hundreds of spam and junk that I manually deleted from all my accounts. Still
no go.

What I still need to try is to download the Office 2000 Service Release 1a
(SR-1a); maybe I need that before I can d/load Office 2003 SP? Looking for
the disk now.

When Outlook mail is being downloaded, I check CPU and it bounces all over
the place, from a low of 5 to 100 and everything in between.

This is so frustrating. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Terry
