Can't edit an embedded object

Using SP-1 I had no problems, but when I upgraded to SP-3,
I can not open embdedded objects, such as an Excel table.

I get the error message, "The server application, source
file, or item can't be found, or returned an unknown
error. You may need to reinstall the server application".

I have re-installed several times (SP-1, then upgrade to
SP-3). The knowledge base only tells me to go the the
latest SP.

Any ideas on how to reolve this, other than staying at SP-
1.

BTW, I am running Windows 2000, SP-4, 5.00.2195
