Can't edit file

R

Robert

My daughter scanned a text document and placed it on a flash drive. I took
it off the flash drive and placed it in WordPad. It now shows on my computer
with a .doc extension, which I understand is a Word file. I do not have
Microsoft Word. I have Works 7.0. I can open the document in WordPad or
Works and read it, but I cannot edit it. It is surrounded by a frame. Is
there anything I can do to permit me to edit the document? Thank you.--

Scanning a document typically creates a *picture* of its content - not
editable text. In order to render an editable file the source document must
be scanned using OCR (optical character recognition) software. Some scanners
include OCR software, some do not, either way various programs are
available. If you (or your daughter) don't have OCR software & intend to
purchase it just check to make sure it supports your scanner brand/model.
