Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Intel Hi, I created a brochure using the New Blank Publishing Layout Document. Now that I've put a days work into it, I can't mail the bloody thing! I've tried saving it in every conceivable format, tried zipping them, turning on and off compatability (as sometimes it says 25 compatibility issues, and sometimes 46!). I am really at my wits end... please help!!!!

I hope you have a few wits left to work this. You don't actually say
what the symptoms of the problem are. you talk about "saving it" and
then say "zipping them". Do you have one or more files?

Surely, if the file exists then the file is surely ok. Then the issue
is simply using your email program to attach that document to the email
and then sending it. Suggest you re-read the instructions about how to
use your email program and forget about making this a problem for Word?

Hi,

I have two brochures - essentially the same, but one has a translucent photo as a background and the other simply has a fill colour. I have figured out that that is really the problem, as the one without the photo background sends fine. The one with the photo background is approx 16 mb - hence the problem, as none of the email services I use will send it. Even zipped, it is close to 16 mb. If you have any solutions other than dumping the photo background, I'm all ears.

Hi Aideen;

What you haven't indicated is _how_ you're attempting to email the document
& what does/doesn't happen to prevent doing so. Without that info there
really isn't anything specific to be offered, but in general...

Pub Layout View is unique to Word 2008 -- it is not available in any other
version of Word. For that reason most Pub Layout docs cannot be displayed
properly in any other program, including other versions of Word. The feature
is primarily intended for producing *printed* output rather than for
electronic distribution of documents. That's the main reason the
Compatibility Report is working overtime. If you're interested in the
recipients seeing the document as you've designed it, save it as a PDF using
the File> Save As dropdown for 'Format:' or by using the PDF button in the
File> Print dialog. Attach the PDF to your email message.

Yes, 16 mb will probably not work in email.

What I use is a "neutral" web site which offers public folders. You
upload and then tell your correspondent to go get it there to download.
Last I looked, EverNote, Microsoft, Dropbox and others provide this and
usually free. If you have an IT Dept to discuss this with, get guidance
from them.

Pull the photo out into iPhoto.

Crop it to include only the part you want to see, then re-sample it to a
smaller size.

If you are using iPhoto, you need to use File>Export... Then set the "size"
to "small". If this picture is simply a background, you could also
experiment with reducing the JPEG quality below 50%. Each change will have
a dramatic reduction in the file size.

Then put the pic back in using the "Change Picture" command in Publishing
Layout.

Hope this helps

Open photo in a Graphics editing program and first save a copy of the
photo next on the copy reduce the dpi from 600 or 300 dpi to no more
than 150 dpi. Next if you need to sharpen the photo (I use
GraphicConverter) use sharpen edges. Next the reduce the photo size to
from probably what it is down to 4 by 6 inches. and Finally save a copy
as a png file which MS products seem to work with better than anything else.

Now try inserting the picture and see if you can email.

GraphicConverter on the Mac is greatest thing since sliced bread. Its
only $69 and it will do just about anything that Photoshop will do with
the possible exception exposure control and scratch removal. although
you can sort of do that by magnifying the picture use selection box to
select an area adjacent to it that is the same color and texture
copying, pasting and the moving the pasted element of the blemished
part. if you do it right you never know scratch is there.
