can't erase solid horizontal line

When I create a line with the feature of turning dashes into a solid line or
when I cut and paste text from another file (especially with transcripts with
line numbers), I end up with solid horizonal lines that I can't delete nor
cut. How can I get rid of the solid horizontal lines?
