can't even open/run inbox repair tool

I get this error msg to close outlook and run Inbox Repair Tool with
Scanpst.exe. When I try to run scanpst.exe, it asks me where I want to
extract it to, like it's a zip file installing a new program. But no, it
extracts to a new file called scanpst.exe_0002 (always that name no matter
where I install it). Which doesn't run at all. How do I get this thing to
run/install/repair my in box??

Looking here and help gives me no clue. Someplace else on Microsoft.com said
something about running Office Diagnostics but where is that?? I have
individual Office programs, no overall Office diagnostics.

It's bad enough to be told you need to repair your inbox but I'm getting
pretty frustrated that nothing I see on my screen matches what all the "help"
says is supposed to happen.

Office 2007 on Vista 64-bit

Thanks in advance

Where did you look for SCANPST.EXE?

For most of the Office apps, it's Help>Office Diagnostics. For Excel and
Word it's Office Orb>Resources>Diagnose.

Thanks. for some reason (I have no idea why) the Repair program did run
properly this time when I clicked on it. It was in Program Files
(x86)/Microsoft Office/Office12, which is where I tried to run it from
yesterday too when it just did that weird extract thing. Of my Outlook pst
files, the Repair program did find a few errors in the main Outlook.pst file.
I guess the repair went OK. I didn't understand what was in the log file. It
took me awhile to even find the log file since the name is not given by the
program, so I had to search on all files modified today.
(I wonder about developers who create programs like this with log files' but
NEVER inform or ask the user of the log files name or location. . . .??)

Thanks for the bit about Office Diagnostics. Since most Outlook maintenance
info is under Outlook Tools Menu and since one would assume generic Office
stuff like an Office Diagnostics Tool would be under Office button/menu, I
didn't think to look in Office Help. All this stuff is so Designed by
Committee, so remarkably inconsistent.

But at least problems SEEM to have gone away. Thanks. I have some much more
minor issues/questions re Outlook but maybe I'll deal with them next week . .
