Can't figure out categories/groups high level permissions

Hi, I have to set up the security of our Project server 2002.

After reading Gary Chefetz book "Implementing Entrerprise Portfolio
Management with Microsoft Project Server 2002", I thought I knew all there is
to know about groups/categories relationship: I didn't.

I first set high level permissions for groups to their default states (using
tables 10-1 in Gary Chefetz book). Then, I wanted to set categories to their
default states (using table 10-3):

1)How come I can't set the categories permissions until at least one user or
group is selected? Group settings were made in the manage users and groups
page.

2)If two or more users/groups are assigned to the category, the permissions
are changing depending on the user/group selected. How do I go about setting
the category permission to their default states without being affected by
users/groups permissions?

I'm definitely missing something here.

Can anybody help?

Hi Gary

My templates are intact, the problem is that it doesn't work the way I
thought it should.

Global permissions are easy since there is only place where you can manage
them: the manage users and groups menu.

High level permissions are more difficult since they appear in two screens:
manage users and groups/modify groups + manage security/categories/modify
category.
I thought I had to set the permissions for groups in the modify groups page,
then set the permissions for categories in the modify category page. The
resulting permissions for the group would be the merge between permissions of
the group and permissions of the categories to which the group have access.

1)In the modify groups page, I tried to set group permissions as per table
10-1 in your book. But now, every time I select a category in the "selected
category" box, the permissions keep changing depending of the category
selected. So how do I go about setting my groups permissions as per table
10-1 once and for all?

2) In the modify category page, I tried to set permissions as per table 10-3
in your book. But now, every time I select a group in the "users and grops
with permissions" box, the permissions keep changing depending of the group
selected. Why can't I set permissions for a category once and for all?

This is driving me nuts!

I really need an explanation here.

Thanks

Jan.
