can't fill in application form

Hello Word Folks:

A friend has an downloaded application on his computer in MSWord
format, but he can't fill it in from within Word. (The creator of the
form seems to have wanted him to print it and fill it in by hand,
which he doesn't want to do. Maybe bad handwriting?) It is password
protected.

I went through a slightly awkward procedure to try to help him,
wherein I opened the document in Wordperfect (yep, I'm one of those WP
people) and then saved it as an MS word document. Now I can type in it
the open fields, but everything to the right gets pushed forward, as
one might expect, since none of the fill in fields are now protected,
or so it seems.

I now realize from an earlier post that I could have inserted the file
into a blank MS Word document and tried it, but the results were the
same.

Is there anyway to fill in this application from within Word?
Many thanks.

Hi Jack,

I use Word 2003. The only thing I can think of is that the new
document may not really contain those "working fields" any more.

Given the same situation, what I'd likely do is delete the existing
'fields' and replace them with new working ones. (View, Toolbars,
Forms...when the toolbar comes up, click on "insert text form field".)
Once you 'padlock' the field (via the same toolbar), one can enter text
into it.

Good luck and sorry I wasn't more help!

I have Word 2003 as well, and I'm just getting into it (being a
longtime WP user) but this " fill-in-application" thing was over my
head. I have copied your advice and will forward it to my friend with
the problem. Sounds very reasonable, from the little I know.
It's kind of you to help.
Many thanks.
