Can't find or open program

I have word 8.0 on Windows ME. I connected a HP laserjet
scanner. Since then I am unable to open word from the
shortcut bar or even find it at all. I have word 6.0
which I can find. The error message says:"Problem with
shortcut. Action only for currently installed programs."
I do not have my word 8.0 disk.
