Can't find the parent folder in the file find dialog box

In Word 2004, I do file, then open. I use the search box in the finder window for the folder "our finances". Two folders show up because they happen to exist in two different locations with the same name.

Now it is impossible to determine the parent folder of either of these folders! Am I missing something? How to I go up one level, without separately opening finder and starting over?

How did you manage do it in 2004? AFAIK, 2004 & 2008 use the same
OS-generated Open dialog. Which version of OS X?
