Can't find Word 5.1 Menu options in v.x (?)

Matthew Bowles

I'm a long time Word/Office user, and I just upgraded (finally) to
Office v.x for Mac OS X from Office 98 running in Mac OS 9. In Office
98, I used an option to show the Word 5.1 menus (because I'm more
familiar with that version.) I can't seem to find a similar option in
Office v.x. Was this feature removed, or am I looking in the wrong
place? I did find an option under Tools --> Customize to show the Word
5.1 toolbar, but this didn't seem to affect the menus at all - just
the toolbar.

I did find an earlier thread
(http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=....2A060%25bethrosengard%40earthlink.net&rnum=1)
which seemed to indicate that the menu option should be available, but
the suggestions it offered didn't help (I tried all steps).

Any other tips would be very much appreciated - I don't want to revert
to the OS 9 version, but I feel like I'm at the end of my wits with
this! Thanks.

Hi Matthew,

Apparently, from what I've been able to learn, the Word 5.1 menus cannot be
implemented in Word X; they are just too different. The original poster in
the thread you found must have been mistaken. And I, not being in Word X,
so having no way of checking his claim directly, was also mistaken in
thinking there was a way of restoring them. Sorry.

So you will have to use Word 98 in Classic or learn to live without the 5.1
menus. Are there specific commands that you're looking for? They may exist
in a different form in Word X.

Beth,

Thank you very much for your reply, it looks like I'll have to start
getting used to the new menu system. Old tricks / new dogs etc etc.
Again, sorry about the multiple postings, it won't happen again.

Hi Matthew,

Well, there's new information on this and you'll like it! In case you've
given up in disgust, I'm copying this to you directly.

You *can* implement the Word 5.1 menus in Word X, though getting there is
even less intuitive than usual <grumble>.

Go to Tools> Customize, click on All Commands (it must be All Commands),
scroll down and locate the Word5Menus command and drag that to the View
toolbar. Click Ok to close customize and you should then be able to switch
to Word 5 menus.

Live and learn.

Terrific, thanks, I never would have found that on my own, but it works
perfectly now, and it even pulls up the 5.1 toolbar as well.

Thanks again.
