Can't generate colon, capital letters..

I occasionally use the family laptop, when away from base. During my lastest
visit, noticed suddenly I can no longer generate a colon from the keyboard.
(Can do it via the symbols menu) buy this is no help when I'm online and trying
to type an URL!). Also, for some reason I cannot type certain capital letters,
notably C. The keyboard just ignores them.. Why is this? Have I got some bug in
Word (2000), and shall I have to reinstall the whole thing? I'm using the UK
version of Word.
