I cannot get a £ sign. When I press the £ sign key on my
keyboard I get a # and when I press the # key I get a \.I
have made sure my O.S. is set to English UK and word is
also set to English UK.

I'm not sure why the keys are messed up, but you can still
get a £ sign if you go to Start, Programs, Accessories,
System Tools, Character Map. You can find the symbol
there and it will tell you the Alt-keystroke (Alt-0163 on
your number pad for £). You can also copy it from the
window on the right, and paste it into Word. A lengthy
work-around, but it works, even if your keyboard
doesn't. :)

If you don't have Character Map, you can add it by going
to Start, Control Panel, Add Remove Programs, Windows
Setup (tabsheet), System Tools, (Details) Character Map,
then add it. You'll need your source cd, or the cab files
(always keep the cabs on your computer!).

Hope that helps a bit.

Although Character Map is quite useful in that it can be used in any Windows
application, using Insert | Symbol is easier in Word, and you can assign a
keyboard shortcut for any character in the dialog. See
