Can't get a blank document to appear

Every time I try to open up Microsoft Word and attempt to get a new
blank document, I continue to get an old document. I can never just
get a new blank document to appear. Any suggestions to correct this?
Thanks.

PS. Did Word crash or anything, just before you started seeing this? Is it
the doc you were working on during or near a crash? Can you think of
anything out of the ordinary that happened just before the problem appeared?
It's a mystery how that text gets there.

Can't think of anything that happened. I'm still kind of stumped. I
tried looking up your suggestions with Testing the Normal Template.
But I was not able to change things.

What, you couldn't find the Normal template? Or you couldn't open it? Or
you couldn't delete the text? Or you did all that, but still get new
documents that aren't blank?

When you open it, make sure the window bar says Normal, not Document1, or it
isn't really the Normal template.

OR just quit Word, drag the Normal template to the desktop, and reopen Word,
that should force it to generate a new Normal template.

What version of Word is this, anyhow?
