can't get a new window or new doc to open..HELP

Every time I open Word an old not saved document appears,
and I have to select, delete and then I can treat it like
a new page, it will print the new info, but it will not
save it. I've tried to go from the menu bar and pull down
a new document and still the same old doc comes up.
HELP!!!
