Can't get curly brackets

Whenever I press Alt+F9 in a Word2000 document I get a "R" enclosed in
a circle......
Please help!

The curly brackets for fields is CTRL+F9 -
ALT+F9 is for displaying the field content - a toggle setting
ALT+CTRL+F9 is assigned by default to the symbol.
