cant get email forms to work anymore

G

Greg

this is going to be a bit technical to explain so please bear with me, i SOOO
need an answer...

using FP 2002...This has worked with no problem for years and as of like a
year ago, things stopped working with no clue why. With the email form that
FP can make, i could easily have the results from a form emailed to wherever
I wanted by going to form properties/email address. I know what Im doing
when it comes to doing this. When I click ok, i get the pop up about "this
form is being created on a disk based web...etc...would you like to remove
the email recipient" and i click no. I never really understood why i get
this popup being im uploading it to a FP website but I always clicked no and
things would be fine.

I would upload my page to the site (i had numerous sites at one time, all
reacting the same) and when i would try out the page, it would come back with
the error...

"FrontPage Error."
"User: please report details to this site's webmaster."
"Webmaster: please see the server's application event log for more details."

I use to be able to get the Success page but never do on any of my sites
anymore. I contacted the support for the webspace i use and they determined
its a problem on my end being when they made a test page, it worked
fine...which i saw that it did myself.

when playing with it, i would add more fields, even rename the pages
filename, upload to a different part, and so on and the page would STILL work
with no problems. I didnt get the problem again till I accessed the form
properties and made a change...in this case, i changed the email address it
was sending the results to. Again, though not sure if its related to the
problem being i got it when things worked way back, but still get the pop up
about "this form is being created on a disk based web...". After uploading
that page again and testing it, i would get the "Frontpage Error" page again.

Ive tried a FP repair and also reinstall and i am lost. It seems that this
is a problem on my end now after thinking forever that it was a server
problem. What could be causing this and what else can i check???

Most hosts require that email address to be within the same domain as your
website..soooo if your web is;
www.mygoofyweb.com
then your email would have to be (e-mail address removed)
you couldn't use (e-mail address removed) as the email addr.

I dont think thats it being the support person tested it with an email
address that wasnt related to the domain it was posted on and it worked fine

Are you talking about the email warning when working on disc-based web? -
it's normal - just say NO if it pops up...a disc-based web cannot send
email.

the problem is the whole thing. for the one that works, their is a
confirmation page that tells the fields submitted and the results are
emailed. for the one that doesnt work, i get the frontpage error page and
nothing is emailed. This is also the one for which I changed the email
address from what the support person put in to my own address (have tried
others also).

http://www.pkrecords.com/test.htm (works
http://www.pkrecords.com/test3.htm (doesnt work)

Is the domain hostbreak.com the one the support person used for his
test? If it is, then msn.com could be the cause of failure.

Mail servers used by web sites are set up to allow a list of domains to
use them, and these domains can send to any other domain IN THAT LIST.
ALL these domains are on the server, or specifically allowed by the mail
server administrator. If you use a domain that is not on that list then
the server will reject the email, and probably ask for authorisation
credentials. This may cause the error message. Because we do not know
the contents of the list we say that the email address must be within
your own domain, your own domain will be on that list.

The solution, as Rob said, is to send the email to an account within
your domain. You may be able to set up the account so that all mails to
it are forwarded to the msn.com account you really wish to use.

yes, Hostbreak.com is the hosting company for the site. I believe the
address the support person used was a hostbreak.com address but Ive never
tried an MSN address, only yahoo and aol addresses. Will look into that list
thing and also try other hostbreak.com addresses to see if that does anything
and post the outcome here later. thanks!

Greg

ok, i tried some things... For the page that didnt work, i changed the email
address back to the original one that the support person used to test it
which was a hostbreak.com address, and it worked! BUT, i changed it to
another hostbreak.com email address and i got the error again, as well as any
yahoo, msn, aol, etc... address. For some reason, it seems like it will only
work with that one email address that the support person put on the page.
Does that help answer anything?

T

Tom [Pepper] Willett

It will only work with the one email address the support person put on the
page, because he configured it in the FrontPage Server Extensions. Any
changes will have to be made in the extensions by him.
