Can't get out of Outline Format

In Word 97, whenever I begin with a number and a period, it forces me
into an outline format. I don't want Word to number or indent my stuff
or tell me what my document should look like. I just want to type on a
blank piece of paper. How can I "turn off" this feature?

Brenda,

Look at tools/autocorrrect options Autoformat tab. Uncheck something like
"automatic bulleted lists, or one of the other options there. It mught me
under autoformat as youtype tab " automatic numbered lists. I have word
2002, so you might have a slightly different menu .
