Can't get rid of shadow text obn slides

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)
Processor: Intel

I've noticed this problem with the upgrade to PowerPoint 2008.
On a slide with bullet points, I want the bullet points to come up one at a time. No problem with the earlier version of PowerPoint.
With the 2008 version, I can do bullet point by bullet point, but the other bullet points appear on the screen in a semi-transparent way, or with ghost letters, or with shadow letters.
I've tried "custom animation" and turning off Shadow on the palette, but to no avail. Any suggestions?

I'm responding to my own question because a colleague helped me figure out the problem.

By changing the theme in PowerPoint 2008, I was able to eliminate the ghost letters.

Thank you VERY much for figuring this out! The greye-dout text kind of gave away my points before I got there. Made it hard in class to ask for interpretations and then reveal the answer.... THANKS!
