Can't get the SmartArt graphic I want into my document

Hey all,

I am trying to get one of the SmartArt graphics into a word document. I click on hierarchy from the toolbar and see the selection I want below it (one of the hierarchy graphics), but when I click on it, it does nothing. I looked in Help and it said to type the words I want in the "text pane." Is that just like typing in the document, or is there some special place to type to get this feature? I can't figure it out!

When you single-click, the graphic should be inserted, and the text pane
should automatically open (a gray hovering window).

If not, on the upper left corner of the graphic, there should be a
little page icon. Click on that to bring up the text pane, and then you
can enter text into the graphic that way. You should also be able to
type directly into the text boxes in the graphic.

None of this is working for me -- there is no tex pane and no page icon, in fact, it looks like the graphic I want (all of them for that matter) might be grayed out. I am wondering whether this is because the document I am using was converted from an older version of word. Could that be the problem?

That could be the problem, I think. I'm pretty sure that SmartArt
Graphics are only available to the .docx file format--if the title bar
shows [Compatibility Mode], then you can't use some of the new features.
Here, with a .doc, I'm also seeing blued-out unavailable graphics.

Not sure what happens if you go betweeen the two formats in the same file.

Hi There -

I think the document type is the problem. Thanks for your help.

Although Daiya nailed it I just wanted to add one thing: If you save a .docx
containing SmartArt graphics & open that file in some other version that
requires a converter the graphics will be affected accordingly. The AmartArt
graphics & many of the effects available in 2007/2008 rely on the new Escher
graphics engine, so converted files will lose shadowing & other features
enabled by that engine.

Make sure you have the document in .docx format. SmartArt can't be used in
documents that are in "Compatibility Mode".

Look at the top of the Word window ‹ if the words "Compatibility Mode"
appear after the file name, that's the problem.

The old .doc format does not support SmartArt. If your document is in .doc
format, you need to re-save it as a .docx.

Cheers

Yes, that's the problem ‹ see my earlier answer.

SmartArt is not supported in .doc format, or in Compatibility Mode in the
..docx format.

Look in the title bar at the top of the Word window. If the words
"Compatibility Mode" appear after the name of the file, that's the problem.

If you converted that up from .doc, you need to re-save it as .docx.

You then need to ensure when you do this that you UNcheck the "Maintain
compatibility with Word 97-2004" checkbox on the Save As dialog.

Hope this helps
