Can't get Word 2000 to open

I

iccohen

Hello-

Have Office 2000. Exce, etc, can open but Word can't. It gets to the Splash
Screen and just freezes. I have uninstalled & reinstalled, and even deleted
the Normal. dot template, all to no avail.

I am running Windows XP with AVG Anti-virus, Sygate Personal Firewall,
Spybot, Ad-Aware, etc.

Just downloaded the series of patches from Microsoft dated 6/14/05. Can't
say if these are the cause, because I haven't used Word in a couple of
weeks.

Anybody have suggestions on what I should try? (Note- can't remove Microsoft
patches, and I stupidly forgot to setup a System Restore).

Thanks,

I tried all the options in the document (which I found quite throough and
easy to follow). When I used the winword.exe /a option, I was able to open
Word no problem, which tells me that something is corrupt.

Unfortunately, there was nothing in the Word Startup folder (I showed hidden
files, still nothing) to move/delete. I even deleted the Word Registry Key,
and ALL the templates & wizards, but to no avail.

Argh, this is getting aggravating....

....any more thoughts?

Thanks,

If I choose a System Restore point from a month or two ago, will that impact
my programs drastically? I ask, because I am quite frustrated that all
logical steps to repair just aren't working, and Word is the only app that's
affected (considering I've reinstalled 3-4 times already). Would
uninstalling ALL of Office 2000 (and cleaning up the Registry with a
program) and reinstalling possibly fix it?

Suzanne-

Yes, to no avail. Does my question re: going to System Restore make sense?

BTW, thanks so much for your help.

I have no experience with System Restore, so I can't advise you on that.

Did you rename normal.dot? Did you reinstall the printer driver?

<sigh> Normal.dot has been renamed several times already, even deleted so
Word would create a new one. I also tried the Printer Driver suggestion
(even removed the rpinter & re-added), but that didn't work either. Do you
know if going to a previous Restore Point would cause great harm to the
machine?

Thanks...

It's very difficult to be certain because we don't know your system.
Generally speaking, restoring to a point prior to the problem 'should' work.
You will need to reinstall all the security patches again though! You may
also realise afterwards what is now missing from your system that was
installed since the restore point that may have messed up Word. SO it is not
a bad plan.

I went back to my June 1 Restore Point and Word worked fine upon the reboot.
As you said, I updated all my software, but I also noted that after I
downloaded the Microsoft patches from June 18 (the "dirty seven"), Word
stopped working again. Safe to say, one of the patches is causing the
problem, so now I'm installing one at a time to see which one is causing the
error. I will then try and uninstall it to see if that works, if not, back
to the Restore Point again...

Thanks everyone for your help,

iccohen

Found the fix for the problem (text copied verbatim from
http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6142-0.html?forumID=5&threadID=110016&messageID=1250963):

"Something or someone planted junk in my Registry which prevented Office
2000 Word from loading. The symptiom included nearly 100% CPU usage.
(Reinstalling Office 2000 didn't help.) The offending entry in my Registry
was:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\Office\Word\Addins\AsiDocInfo.Connect\
which
contained four items.
By using RegEdit to rename the bottom part of the tree to
....\word\x-AsiDocInfo.Connect\, the problem went away. (Took me 3-1/2 days
to find it - let's start hanging those SOBs who create this mischief.)
The only item that appears in the above tree when Office 2000 is initially
loaded is ....\Word\msodraa9.ShapeSelect\. Anything beyond this has may
have been planted."

I followed the above steps and it solved the problem.

Thanks,

-iccohen
