Can't have character count show up in the bottom window bar?

Hi, I just switched from Word 2004 to 2008, and I've found that I can no longer have the character count show up in the bottom window bar? It is only showing the "Words" count. Is there any way to change this so that the character count displays?

Please help!

Thanks,
Victor

Content ommitted from the Status Bar is one of the things many of us have
been on MacBU about since we first saw the 2008 version. Unfortunately
nothing has been changed so the answer is No, you can't add to what little is
there. I'd request that you use Help> Send Feedback to add your voice to the
many others who miss that Status Bar information. I doubt that it will be
added back in a 2008 update but if there's enough demand it may return in the
next release of Office.

On the plus side you still can click the word count area on the bar to
produce the complete count dialog. In fact, it might be better to turn off
the dynamic word count in the first place & just use that button or assign a
keystroke to the ToolsWordCount command - the dynamic consumes a lot of
resources.

Hi

In a similar vein, I need that col count at the bottom of the window for my work, writing subtitles which are limited in terms of characters. Is there now no way of showing that anywhere in word 08?

Without that, word is pretty useless to me

thanks for any help

Hi AM -

Please don't think me rude but just to clarify the point :)...

In Word 2008 there are exactly two modifications which can be made to the
Status bar: (1) Have Live Word Count displayed or not, & (2) have the Status
Bar displayed or not.

IIRC, the Column number never has been "optional", it was just *there*. It
is still not optional, but the difference is that it just *isn't* there. Nor
have I seen any reference to that particular piece of information any longer
being available anywhere within the program. Even File> Properties>
Statistics doesn't track the number of columns.

Yeah, Bob's correct:

Word is not a suitable application for what you are doing ‹ you need a Text
Editor, not a Word Processor.

Word processors these days use variable width fonts, so they have lost
interest in the character position on a line, because it can vary depending
upon "which" characters you're talking about.

Sorry: But Word is not your weapon any more!

Cheers

They seem to have changed this, maybe with the last update. Just clcik on the
word count on the bottom bar, and you should see a popup window with the
stats.

I am not sure that is what the original poster wanted ‹ that function (to
click the word count) has been there all along, and as you point out, it
DOES give you the character count.

But what used to appear in the Status Bar was the "Col" Position, i.e. How
many characters from the left the cursor is positioned?

They removed that, because it is difficult to obtain this information in a
modern Word document, and it doesn't make sense unless the font in use for
the whole line is a mono-spaced font, and very few people use those.

Cheers

Would you mind telling me how I toggle display of the status bar? I can’t
seem to find the function. My status bar in Word has disappeared and I’m
wondering whether I hid it without knowing it. Thank you.
