Can't import Corel Draw 11 figure into Word

C

Chris Thomas

Until recently I could copy a simple line figure in Corel Draw, then use Paste
Special in Word to place the figure in a Word document.

Since upgrading to Corel Draw 11 and switching to Mac Word (on OS X), I
can't get Word to recognize the item on the clipboard as a Corel Draw item.
It pastes the figure in as a PICTURE, which prints in a much degraded form.

I also tried cutting a pasting from a similar figure in Adobe Illustrator CS and
had the same PICTURE outcome.

Any ideas?

Hi Chris:

Yeah, well to paste as a Corel Draw item, Corel Draw must be installed on
the operating system that is doing the receiving. Generally, Object Linking
and Embedding does not work properly in Office X.

The actual bug is that the Word Picture is printing at degraded resolution
because it is being converted to a PICT on the way in, then printing as a
bitmap. A Word Picture is actually a 32-bit EMF file, which should print
well at very high resolutions.

I think you will have more success with Word 2004. In the meantime, I would
export from Corel in EPS or WMF and print that as a linked picture from
Word. Again, no guarantees: there are some nasty bugs in the OS X printing
subsystem that mean you will need to simply fiddle around until you get one
that works.

Hope this helps

Thanks John.

I will try to export as EPS and WMF.
This is all rather disappointing since I switched to Mac from Dell to get away
from all the bugs in the Windows OS. And, I just learned that Corel Draw 12
will no longer support the Mac OS. I'll be glad when I retire; then I won't
need to battle these nuisances any longer!

Oh dear :) Well, you will find lots more bugs here than there :) Mac OS
X is very new territory for software developers :)

There's a new version of Office for the Mac coming out: Office 2004. Go up
to that as soon as you can: Office X has some real show-stopper bugs in it,
and you've just found one.

Two others we could tell you about are lack of Unicode support, which means
special characters coming in from PC Word won't work, and lack of long
file-name support, which means file names longer than 31 characters will get
munged. There are a heap of others, but those will prove particularly
annoying.

Sorry :)

Cheers

Pro has Virtual PC included as well. (As for Office v. X.) Microsoft has
owned VPC for a year or two and started including VPC 6.1 as Office v. X Pro
about a year ago. Pro 2004 including VPC 7.0 won't be ready for a few
months. Standard X and 2004 correspond to what's in Office 2001 - Word,
Excel, PowerPoint, Entourage. Students & Teachers Edition is identical, but
a lot less expensive (and 3 licenses included) for those eligible.
