can't import .dbf

I've had this problem before ... either get a warning that jet engine can't
find the file (path/spelling/etc. all correct) or that there is no index.

Am trying to do some things in Access (03) that I haven't done in a long
time. So went back to my MS Press Access 2002 Step by Step. Got to the
chapter on imports -- all went well except for when I came to dbase - Have
followed the steps and get the index missing warning and not the results as
in the book.

what gives? the dbf will usually open in excel if you double click? why?

Excel sees the data itself, and not the structure. It doesn't care what you
put in a cell. A database must protect the data structure so that's
precisely what it cares about.

thanks .. I kind of figured the excel part ... but why won't my access 03
open a .dbf as per the instructions in MS's own step by step tutorial using
files from the cd?

I just tried it and when it got to the index warning, I just cancelled. It
still connected and both linked and imported just fine.
