Can't import directly from OE 4 to Entourage X

When I use the File | Import function in Entourage X, I receive a
message that the operation was not succesful. I want to import both
contacts and messages. This user has 3 years worth of emails, so it's a
big job. I have also tried Exporting Contacts as text and importing
into Entourage X without success.

I am in the process of importing OE 4 DB into OE 5.02, in the hopes
that the problem lies in the OE 4 DB configuration. Even from OE 5.02,
I often have difficulty getting messages imported to Entourage (but
contacts go fine). Any suggestions for me?

That's the way to do it: import OE4 into OE 5.0x, and then import OE5 into
Entourage.

That's the way to do it: import OE4 into OE 5.0x, and then import OE5 into
Entourage.

If you have any problems, do a database rebuild in OE 5: after importing,
quit OE 5, re-launch holding down Option key. Click NO to the first question
about compacting, then YES to rebuild.

Before importing into Entourage X, make sure that you have updated it to the
latest v10.1.6: go to the MacTopia website, download and apply the Office
10.1.6 updater.

I had already installed MS Office X updates - thanks for the reminder.
I imported OE 4 DB into OE 5, did a complex rebuild of the OE 5 DB, and
then successfully imported all data (messages, contacts, etc) into
Office X Entourage. Hereafter, I will always remember to rebuild the DB
to avoid crashes during the import.

Huge thanks for all input here and on other threads. I've never seen an
import go as smoothly as this one did with the steps above.
