Can't insert hyperlink

When I try to Insert Hyperlink in my Word 2000 document,
the command is dimmed. Control K doesn't work either. If I
try to add the icon to my toolbar (Customize), it
disappears.

This must some obscure setting hidden away somewhere, and
I just can't find it. What's up with that?

Hi Chris,

Is your document protected? That will cause the Insert Hyperlink command to
be disabled.

The document is protected only for tracked changes, and I
am not tracking changes. No password is required to open
the document.
