can't install 2007 Beta

E

Ellen Finkelstein

During installation I get this message:
Setup cannot find pro.WW\Pro.WW.cab. Brows to a valid installation source
and then click OK."
It displays a folder in Documents & Settings\[my login]\Local Settings\Temp
called OWP156.tmp. This has a folder Pro.WW which contains a file proWW.cab,
but when I select the Pro.WW folder it says "Invalid Location."

Any ideas? I can't install Office 2007 because of this.

Thanks,
Ellen

Are you installing this from a compressed file without extracting it first to
a folder?
(Compressed file like: *.zip or *.rar)

E

Ellen Finkelstein

No, the download is an EXE file. I double-click it to extract the files. When
that process finishes, installation starts automatically. I'm asked for my
product key and instllation goes on for a little while before giving me the
message that it can't find the folder with the CAB file and that the location
I choose (because the file IS there) is an invalide location.

There could be many reasons why it can't find the folder. For example it
could be "regional setting" or "admin priviliges". But...
A fast workaround could be as following:
1- Install Winrar from www.rarlab.com
2- Right click on the Office installation file and "Winrar-->Open with Winrar"
3- The file will be opened with winrar. Click on "extract to"
4- extract the file to a folder somewhere on your computer (remember the
place)
5- Open that folder and run "setup.exe"

Let me know if this helped.

Hi Brookster,

The MS Office 2007 Professional Plus download package has a built in ability to extract the files to a folder. See if this
procedure works.
=========
1. Start=>Programs=>Accessories=>Disk Cleanup

2. Internet Explorer=>Tools=>Internet Options=>
General=>Delete Files

3. Locate your 2007 Office Professional Beta 2
download file and note this folder/path.

4. Create a new folder on your PC and note the
folder/path location.

5. From Start=>Run use, on a single line:

[drive:\PathOfDownload]<downloadfilename>.exe /extract:"<path>"

where the "<path>" is the drive:\path\foldername that you crated in Step #4.

If this doesn't succeed then the download may be damaged/corrupted.
If it does succeed try running the setup from your new folder and see if you get different results.

(Be sure to backup your files and shutdown all other running apps including antivirus software before starting 2007 Office setup)

Post back with the results please.

I was just thinking if the address to the temp folder has an non-English
character inside? I mean this address:
Documents & Settings\[my login]\Local Settings\Temp
Where [my login] is your user name. Is there any non-English character
inside your username?

I tried using WinRAR. When I double-clicked Setup.exe I got the following
message:
"Setup could not find any available products to install. Please contact
yoursystem administrator."

WinRAR contained 185 files and those were transferred to the folder I used,
which also had 185 files. There was no subfolder structure (I sort of
expected one.)

I'll try the other suggestion on this thread, plus another idea I had.

Bob,
I tried your step-by-step suggestion and this time when the download file
opened, it gave me the "Installation of this package failed." That is, it
didn't even succeed in extracting the files. This file has succeeded in doing
this several times previously, so it's not the file. This happened twice.

Also, I don't have any non-English characters in my username; it's just Ellen.

I'm now redownloading the file for a 4th or 5th time and simultaneously
doing it on another computer. I'm curious to see it it'll work on another
computer, although I really need it on this computer.

The two computers are networked; is it possible to do a network installation
and install on another computer? I never got to a point where I could choose
a location.

Thanks, and please keep on trying to find a solution. I appreciate it.

I just wanted to state here that in another thread I got a solution that
worked. LJ Dellar said< "I had the same problem, but found that if I "ran"
the software instead of saving it at the point of download, it worked fine.
You could try downloading straight to c:\temp (which is where it would end up
if you chose "Run" instead of "Save"."

I just moved my downloaded EXE file to c:\documents and
settings|[loginname]\Local Settings\Temp and double-clicked it and it worked
like magic.

Same problem here. Actually I also tried downloading the whole thing (again!
Up to about 10 times now!) and using 'Run' instead of 'Save'. Neither this
nor moving the previously-saved .exe into C:\Documents and
Settings\[login]\Local Settings\Temp\ worked . . . I have the same exact
problem with the Pro.WW\ cab file. The file is there!!! I have tried this
with my standard login (which has Admin privs), local machine Admin, as well
as with the actual Domain Admin login . . . no luck, same exact symptoms
every time.

One detail I have which is probably relevant: I'm attempting to do a
customized install (as opposed to the default 'Upgrade'), retaining my old
Office (2003) installation and installing Office 12 beta into C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Office 2007\ instead of the default C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Office\. I'm not going to overwrite the old installation so
if that's what it takes to resolve the issue, I guess I'll just settle for
living without the beta. Can't imagine I'm the only one doing this though.

Other thing I'm wondering about: I'm getting the same Product Key every time
I go back to download. Is it possible that my download package is corrupted
somehow (on the server end, e.g. before I even get it across the wire)? And
if so, any ideas how would I "reset", get another Product Key, etc.?

Any suggestions appreciated . . .

Dear Brookster and Fontguy,

I don't think the Custom install is the problem; I also did one and didn't
get rid of my Office 2003.

However, I did think that one reason it couldn't find the file and said that
it was in an invalid location was that my loginname folder (the part after
c:\Documents and Settings and before \Local Settings\Temp was named something
different from my user name. In Control Panel > User Accounts, my user name
is Ellen Finkelstein. But the folder name is just Ellen. Maybe the
installation is looking for c:\Documents and Settings\Ellen Finkelstein ...
And so, look for some discrepancy like that. Of course, since moving the file
to the Temp folder worked for me, I don't know why it didn't work for you, ...

I checked the other computers in my family, and I'm the only one who has
that discrepancy. I was able to install on my husband's computer with no
problem.

Hi Ellen,

Thanks for coming back to answer :)

Unfortunately, no luck for me with that suggestion. The installs I tried
earlier did have foldernames different from the usernames so I had some hope.
But then I set up a new user where they were the same, tried the installer
out of the Temp folder; still no luck. Same exact problem at the same exact
place in the installation (I get about 4 progress bar segments, then it goes
back to zero, repeats twice, then puts up the dialog asking for the
Pro.WW.cab file). I suppose I can try downloading it again but I'm skeptical.

E

Ellen Finkelstein

I'm no computer expert, but I still think that this is crucial. Did you make
sure that the new user was the computer administrator and that you logged in
as that name? I had the exact same behavior with the 4 green boxes starting
over again a couple of times.

It seems to me that since you're logged in as a certain user, the
installation process is looking for a specific path that includes that user
name; it says it's invalid because the files aren't in the path that it
expects.

I don't think that you need to re-download; I think it's just an issue of
the installation process. Keep on trying!

Ellen

F

fontguy

Yes, I tried two different users, one "Font Guy" with directory \Documents
and Settings\Font Guy\Local Settings\Temp\, user has admin privileges. Also
tried as local machine admin, "Administrator", directory \Documents and
Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temp\.

Installation fails in exactly the same way as previously described.

I have to say, I'm a bit skeptical that this username/directory name
discrepancy is the true cause, as it is quite common to have a login name
(and corresponding directory name) which is different from the display name,
especially with Windows Network Domains. Microsoft is well aware of that and
I'd be flabbergasted if that were truly the point of failure (also surprised
more people aren't complaining of this problem). There must be something else.

I have Norton A/V and Internet Security installed, but disabled. I tried it
with AntiVirus on once, just for kicks: makes no difference.

T

Tiletron

I've tried this download three times now and I'm somewhat disappointed. I
know most of you have the luxury of downloading it over and over, but my ISP
places a fixed amount of GB you can download a month, and if it isn't working
by this point the whole idea of repeating until you have working setup file
is stupid. There is also the issue here where other language-versions are
experiencing the same problem; nobody can open or even force Windows to
except the fact that ProWW.cab exists where the extraction has put it...

If I being rude here I apologise, but did it ever occur to Microsoft to
check whether the current build of the beta had a working .cab file BEFORE
they updated them? If what people says is true where not even the CDs work
right, I think you should check them again, just in case :)
