Can't install - doesn't recognize operating system

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I'm trying to install office, and I keep getting an error message saying that my hard drive doesn't have at least 10.4 installed - and I'm actually on 10.5.7. I've rebooted, reset my PRAM. Any other suggestions

Are you sure the mesage is referring to the operating system version?
What -- exactly -- does the message say?

It sounds to me like you may be attempting to install the Office 2008
*upgrade* on a system that doesn't have an elligible prior version of Office
(version 10.x or 11.x).

Nope, but thanks. It' a clean (first time) FULL version install. The install fails at the select destination dialog, stating that I do not have the required minimum operating system version on my startup drive - despite the fact that I have 10.5.7.

Did you have to do a workaround to install Leopard on your system?

Did you try applying the Apple combo updater to see if that helps?

Have you tried the install from a different User?

Do you have any different languages set in International System preference?

The Languages setting for the International System preference is set to one
of the following languages:
Traditional Chinese
Simplified Chinese
Korean
Tibetan

If these conditions are true, Office 2008 for Mac will not install because
of a possible conflict between MacOS X 10.5 and files that contain the
character å (a-ring). By default, Office 2008 for Mac installation program
installs the Norwegian proofing tools package. One of the files in this
package has the character å throughout its contents.

Did you have to do a workaround to install Leopard on your system?

No.

Did you try applying the Apple combo updater to see if that helps?

No effect.
Have you tried the install from a different User?

No. There is only one user, and because this is an editing workstation with very few other software installs, so I would prefer not to do that. If it's necessary, I will probably Craigslist Office, and live with the altered formatting in Pages.

FWIW, your problem is not one we get. Not sure what is different on your
computer that is causing the problem. Did you download the installer or is
this a physical DVD?

Any other suggestions

Just found out this bit of info...

Did you downloaded the trial, and then bought Office from another source? If
you don¹t remove office (including the receipts) before you install the
store bought copy then they end up with a bad install.

Thanks for the feedback,Diane. Believe it or not, this was a clean OS install, updated to 10.5.7, Final Cut Studio, iWork, Adobe CS4 suite on a 15 month old intel machine. The unit has never had a MS product install, either by disc, demo or download. Install is from a DVD. Serial number entered, product code given, and then fails because the OS is being misread as pre 10.4. Ironic, as the machine was BUILT after Leopard was released.

I'll see what I can find out.

I'm having the same problem. I get this message during the installation of this 12.1.9 update: "You cannot install Office 2008 12.1.9 Update on this volume. This update requires Mac OS X version 10.4.9 or later."

I have OS 10.5.7 which, if I'm not mistaken, is later than 10.4.9. I've tried both the auto updater and downloading the update from the website -- no difference. This is a clean machine (employer's Mac) with a clean registered copy of Office 2008 installed (12.1.7). Defective update?

I'm having the same problem.

And I'm giving the same link.

Yes. 10.5 is Leopard and 10.4 is the older Tiger OS.

If you think the download was corrupted, you should download again and try
that. The updater itself is not bad.

Did you run any applications like Monolingual? See Dos and Don'ts for a good
install

Check List to troubleshoot your install

This page has all the solutions for solving this problem. I do not recommend
the 'unofficial fix'. This could keep future updates from installing.

Diane, in both instances, the installer is recognizing the Office software - the installer is not recognizing 10.5.7 is an OS that is older than 10.4.9

I think you meant to say 10.4.9 is older than 10.5.7.

Use the command line to install.

BTW, do you have a Parallels or VMWare running? This could be interfering
with the install too. If you have any external drives attached, try
unmounting them and see if it runs.

Questions from the developer for you. Please give all the info he asks for.

1) Does the Installer is ³fails because the OS is being misread as pre
10.4.²? ( screen shot would be great) You'll have to go back to the
installer to do this.

2) Press CMD+L (that will bring up the installer log). Then change the drop
down to show everything. Copy that text out, and then mail it to me.
