Can't install Office XP because of invalid Key

Hy everybody,

I've a strange problem.

In my company we are running a win 2000 (SP4) Webserver. We need an office
version running there, so we tried to install one of our office xp packages.
This package was installed succesfully on other machines in the past. Now
this machines are gone and the license of this package is free for our
server. During installation we entered the key, but the system told us "Key
not valid" and we can't install the office package.
We even contacted microsoft support and they told us, that our key is valid
and it should work. Three different people enterd the key (excluding any
mistake), but the key which is not valid, even microsoft told us that it is
valid.

We tried nearly everything even cleaning up registry. Then we decided to try
another office. We thought "back to the roots" and installed an office 2000.
Better to say we tried to install it. When setup starts in office 2000 we
had to enter customer information (user, initials, company). After commiting
the infos the installer told us "this key is not valid". Strange thing,
because it was the customer information window and not the window to enter
the key....

Then we thought "ok, perhaps the installer is damaged so we reinstalled the
windows installer (3.1), but the effect on both office versions is still the
same.

Then we tried to enter the following in command prompt:
OurPath\setup.exe /l*v C:\install.txt /qf PIDKEY=OurKey

Both versions (XP and 2000) installed successfully. We were happy until we
tried to start one of the office programms for the first time.

In office 2000 the following happend:
Word started and wanted us to enter customer information (user, initials,
company). Doing that office told us once again "Key not valid" Damn! At this
place we had no chance to enter one...! So office refused to work

In office xp the following happend:
Word started as expected. But trying to klick any command in word did not
work. So we tried product activation which seemd to work, but still no
interactivity with any office programm.


Our conclusion is, that there must be something wrong with our server,
because neither Office XP nor Office 2000 can be installed properly.

We are out of ideas....

version of the software: such as trying to use a retail key on an OEM
version of the product. Did Microsoft check that the key was valid for your
type of media? It may be a valid key, but not for the specific package of
Office.

Was the license originally pre-installed and provided by an equipment
vendor? If so, you would have difficulty installing it on another
system--especially with a valid Retail product key.

I don't know that this matches your situation, but thought I'd propose it.

It can also happen if you have multiple versions of Office, or Works, on the
system.
