Can't install PowerPoint from Office 2002 CD

Sara

I have Office Standard XP 2002 installed from the disk that came with my Dell
PC, and just realised I don't have PowerPoint. I tried to install it from the
CD, but PowerPoint is listed as being "unavailable" with a red cross next to
it on the list of programs. Was PowerPoint not included on this CD?

No. You'll need to purchase PowerPoint separately
as a "Full Version" and not an "Upgrade Version".

Are you sure you have Office XP Standard and not Office XP Small Business
Edition? PPT should be included in Office XP Standard.

You'd save money buying 2003 Student teacher version of Office which has
word, pp, excel, and outlook & you 'll upgrade to 2003 if you qualify for the
s/t version--practically everyone in a home setting does.

I'm confused - when I look at the product page for Office XP Standard (eg.
boxed version on Amazon), PowerPoint is listed as being included. Are there
different versions of Office XP Standard? And if I buy an upgrade to Office
2003, will I get PowerPoint with it? Or do I have to buy the full version of
Office 2003... or the upgrade plus a separate full version of PowerPoint?

The CD says "Office XP Standard" - nothing about Small Business on it
although there's a small chance I might have asked for a version without PPT
(I don't recall), if it was an option, because I didn't think I'd need it at
the time.

It is confusing, Sara.

It's possible you have an upgrade version of Office XP Standard, and I
*think* if you're trying to use it to upgrade, say, Office XP SBE, it won't
work. Honestly, though, I can't remember what's in each of the previous
versions, and I can't find any pages that have that information all nicely
laid out -- or not even nicely laid out, for that matter. Grrrr.

But you are correct that there are different versions of Office. There
aren't different versions of Office Standard, but there are different Office
editions -- for example, with Office XP there's an Office Professional (or
maybe it was Office Premium?), Office Standard, Office Small Business
Edition, etc. Office SBE didn't have PPT.

Mary's advice to purchase an upgrade to Office 2003 may be the easiest
solution. Yes, the various editions of Office 2003 do include PowerPoint.
The student and teacher version also has PPT. Oh, Office Basic. It doesn't
include PPT, so don't get it.

I looked endlessly for this as well, and couldn't find anything - except
mentions of XP Standard that *do* include PPT. My CD definitely says Standard
so I still don't get it.

But wouldn't I have to purchase the full version of 2003, not the upgrade?
If I get the upgrade won't it look for a previous installation of PPT and not
find it? (I looked at the student/teacher criteria and I don't qualify so I
think I'll have to go for the full-blown most expensive verison.)

There should be a down arrow head next to the Red X, click on the arrow head
and select Run on My Computer. In this case, as you have Office 2003
Standard, Not Available means not installed.

If I get the upgrade won't it look for a previous installation of PPT and

Good question, sorry I didn't explain this before -- the Office 2003 Upgrade
will add PPT to previous versions, even if they didn't have PPT.

To make sure you have a qualifying product, and to make sure the edition
you're looking at has PPT included (it should), go here
http://www.microsoft.com/office/editions/howtobuy/compare.mspx , click the
edition you're interested in, and then click the "upgrade eligibility" link.
If you have a product listed in the upgrade eligibility section, you should
be good to go and get the Office 2003 Upgrade version.

Is your Office XP Standard version an upgrade?
