Can't install updates

The Office Update site informed me the following files needed to be installed: Word 2002 Security Patch KB830346
Excel 2002 Security Patch KB830350 and OFFICE XP WEB SERVICES UPDATE KB812708. I initiated the process and they downloaded properly. Next I was asked for my PowerPoint 2002 CD (I bought this application seperately from my Office XP suite) for the installation of the above mentioned files. It never took place, though; after I inserted the CD and it attempted to install the updates, I received an installation error. Thinking that perhaps the DVD-ROM drive was having trouble reading the disc, I initiated the process again--this time inserting the PowerPoint 2002 CD on the other drive. Same thing happened. What's wrong?

I am running Windows Me / Office 97. The Security Bulletin saysOffice 97 Service Packs 1,2,&2B must be installed for tyhe updates to work. I tried to install it and it failed. I was directed to the knowledge base and received the following instructions. They also failed.

Close Unnecessary Memory-Resident Programs
Programs that run in the background in memory are called terminate-and- stay-resident programs (TSRs). For example, these programs may be virus protection software, utility programs, print manager programs, or screen savers.
If Your Operating System Is Microsoft Windows 98 or Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)
Quit all unnecessary programs that are running before you install the Office 97 SR-1 Patch. To do this, follow these steps:
Click Start, and then click Run.
Type msconfig in the Open box and then click OK.
Click Selective startup on the General tab of the System Configuration Utility dialog box. Clear the following check boxes under Selective Startup:

Process Config.sys file
Process Autoexec.bat file
Process Winstart.bat file
Process System.ini file
Process Win.ini file
Load startup group items

NOTE: One or more of these check boxes may not be available, depending on the files present on your computer.
If your operating system is Windows Me, click the Startup folder tab so that it is in front, and then click to select *StateMgr.
Click OK.
Click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer.
Install the Office 97 SR-1 Patch.
Click Start, and then click Run.
Type msconfig in the Open box and then click OK.
Click Normal startup on the General tab of the System Configuration Utility dialog box.
Click OK.
Click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer.

Any suggestions?

I had this same problem with Office 97 and had to call
Miscroft to help. The person on the phone helped me using
the Eraser 97 program and some other steps to fix. It had
to do with my having Office 97 and FrontPage 2000?
I am now having the same problem since I messed up the
registery. I may have to call Miscroft again this time so
I can update to Office 2003.
I hope you find an answer.
