Can't Install Upgrades of Microsoft Office

Jan Brown

Early last year, Microsoft AutoUpdate ran while my computer (17" PowerBook)
was attached to a Maxtor external hard drive. I didn't recognize that MAU
had selected the external drive, and an Office update was installed on the
external drive. When I recognized what had happened, I tried to install
again, but with the external drive removed. This time, MAU said that the
proper application could not be found to upgrade. I finally just dragged
all the related files from the external drive to my PowerBook. Office ran
fine doing this, but from then on, no updates would install on the
PowerBook. How can I correct this. I would like to install the new 11.3.5
without having to install on the external drag and dragging back to the
PowerBook. Any ideas on how to correct this?

The actual error message is: "The installer could not locate the correct
version of the software required to install this update."

Please note that the last latest version of Office 11.3.4 is installed on my
computer.

Something must have gone wrong during that upgrade, and moving Office system
files from one disk to another is never really a good idea, as it makes the
issue even more complicated.

I would recommend removing and then re-installing Office. To do that, drag
the Remove Office application from inside Applications/Microsoft Office
2004/Additional Tools/Remove Office to the desktop, then run it. After it
has done its job, see if the Microsoft Office folder is still in the
Applications folder; if it is, drag it to the trash. Now re-install Office,
and you should be able to install updates again.

Unfortunately, I do not have the original install disks. I have been using
an upgrade package for years, and I lost the original install floppies some
years ago during a move.

You can probably pick up a copy of Office98 very cheaply on eBay, or
perhaps your local Mac store/user group would know where you could
obtain one. You wouldn't need to install it, just put it in the CD drive
when Office 2004 Startup asks you for a valid copy (in fact, I'm not
sure that a previous upgrade copy wouldn't be accepted, but I've never
tried it).
