How can I get it to stop?

I just upgraded. This didn't happen to me in Word 2004

It could be a symptom of the font issues imposed by Snow Leopard but first
check to confirm what keyboard input method you're using. Also, see if
there's a check in Word> Preferences - Edit for 'Match font to keyboard'...
if so clear the checkbox.
