Guys,

I hope you can help me with this one. Can't find anything about it in the MS
Website.

I'm running Off97 Professional on Win98 2nd edition (old software I know,
but it's all I need on this PC) and when I go to launch Word I get the "This
program has performed an illegal operation etc. etc." stating that <WINWORD
caused an invalid page fault in module WINWORD.EXE at 0187:300804a6>

Anybody know what's causing this?
It was working ok for a long time, and this just started to happen out of
the blue!

The first thing to try:

Close Word.
Locate normal.dot. Rename it normal.do!.
Restart Word.

A new normal.dot will be created when word starts.

Let us know.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your reply.

<normal.dot> is the DOS name for the Word template <Normal>. Am I looking at
the right file?
Unfortunately I'm DOS illiterate!, do I need make the change in DOS or is
there a way to do it in windows?

rgds,

David.

You can do it in a variety of ways. E.g. Start Search and enter
normal.dot into the slot as the file to search for. When found, highlight
the filename in the usual way, right mouse click and rename it.

If that does not work, check the references Suzanne suggests.

Tom, Suzanne

Guys, thank you so much for your help.
Sorry for not getting back sooner. I was away for a couple of weeks.

normal.do! (or normal.old) didn't work
So followed <ProbsOpeningWord> link and discovered that my problem eminated
from a corrupt Registry file, which I fixed, following the online
instructions.

Word is now working perfectly!

Buckets full of gratitude to you both.

David.
