Running into the same problem with MS Word 2007 on Window XP. PDF files should open using Adobe Acrobat Reader 9.
This is the link I have been trying:
http://www.ipenz.org.nz/IPENZ/Forms/pdfs/Competence-Development-Record-Keeping-Tutorial.pdf
Tested another couple PDFs from the same site and it seems they don't open when using a Word 2007 hyperlink either

Hyperlink in Word 2007 showing error message

I do not know if it is a Mac versus PC issue, but, the following link:
http://www.dhcr.state.ny.us/Forms/Rent/rtp8.pdf
works fine in Word 2007 here (running Windows 7 on a PC, not a Mac). These
links do not work in Word or in my browser; but the failure in Word is not
due to a Word problem, rather it is due to the links effectively being
broken:
http://www.bond.edu.au/about/campus/maps/campus-map-A4-grid.pdf
http://www.staff.bond.edu.au/quality/policies/teaching/TLR201.pdf
The first says that document does not exist on the server, and the second
times out--www.staff.bond.edu.au is not reachable, apparently. This is
independent of Word.
Here, however, all .pdf URLs that work in my browser also work fine when
links are placed in a document in Word 2007.
Of the three examples I have seen in this thread, only
http://www.dhcr.state.ny.us/Forms/Rent/rtp8.pdf appears to be valid. For
those of you for whom this link is not working, what exactly happens in Word
when you exercise the link? Any error message? Does your browser respond at
all? I.e., at what point does it fail, and what error message does it
provide?

Can't link to PDF pages on external sites
In Word 2007 I cannot insert a hyperlink to an external page that happens to
be in PDF form. But I can do this in other versions of Word. When I open the
document in Word 2004, for example, the external link works. But when I open
the same document in Word 2008, it does not.
Here are examples:
This link to an HTML page works on both platforms:
http://www.dhcr.state.ny.us/forms/rent/index.htm
But this link works in Word 2003 and Word 2004 (on a Mac) but not in Word
2008:
http://www.dhcr.state.ny.us/Forms/Rent/rtp8.pdf
I can enter that URL into IE and it works fine. But when I ask Word to open
the same document, I get this error:
Unable to open
http://www.dhcr.state.ny.us/Forms/Rent/rtp8.pdf. Cannot open
the specified file

Hi George,
Word doesn't have a built in capability to open a PDF as a document. You
can insert a PDF as an object/graphic (if multipage, only the first page
appears in the document), or use a 3rd party converter/OCR software to
convert a PDF to an RTF/DOC file.
You can create a hyperlink *to* a PDF document *from* within a Word document
but the behavior that results when you try to use it can depend on what app
(if any) the person following the link has set for the PDF file type.

Bob,I think you need to re-read the original post again.
Bob,
I think you need to re-read the original post again.
The op *is* creating a hyperlink *to* a PDF document, and the
behaviour that occurs in versions of Word *other than* 2007 is normal
'PDF-opening' behaviour on his machine.
But, when trying to click the *same* hyperlink in Word 2007, the error
"Unable to open
http://www.dhcr.state.ny.us/Forms/Rent/rtp8.pdf.
Cannot open
the specified file" is shown.
I am having the same problem.
This hyperlink in a word 2007 document works -
http://www.bond.edu.au/about/campus/maps/campus-map-A4-grid.pdf - and
opens in Adobe Reader.
This doesn't -
http://www.staff.bond.edu.au/quality/policies/teaching/TLR201.pdf
- gives me the error as above (is internal intranet link, but I know
it is valid)
Both hyperlinks work in a web browser.
It's obviously a bug with Word 2007. Both mine, and the op's
problematic hyperlinks are sub-domains... ??
