Can't make new style for rest of document

I'm formatting a book in Word 07; the first chapter needs a "first
line" formatting, with no spaces between paragraphs, and everything
after it needs no first line indent, and 12pt spacing between
paragraphs. If I try to change the Normal style to the latter (when
I'm past the first chapter) it changes the first chapter as well. I'm
putting section breaks between each chapter, so I don't know what's
wrong.

I'm using Insert > Object > Text from File to import HTML docs, and am
having to manually highlight the text from each new import and change
the paragraph style just for that bit of text. It's very frustrating.

WinXP SP 2, Word 2007
