Can't make Word format window semi transparent

I installed Office 2004 on a G4 and an iMac on OS 10.3 On the G4 the Word
format window is semi-transparent unless the cursor is over it. No such
effect on the iMac. Why not?

Go to Tools > Customise > Customise formatting pallette...

you should be able to control its behaviour from there!
