Can't merge password protected Excel File into Word

I am currently having a problem with trying to merge a password protected
Excel file into MSWord 2002. If I take the password off it works just fine.
As soon as I select the file to merge it the Data Link Properties window pops
up, which it didn't do in Office2k (usually a password window pops up, I type
it in and the file merges). Then whether I hit cancel or ok I get this Error
"ODBC Excel Driver Login Failed" and inside the message it says "Could not
decrypt file." And then it wont merge the files. I can't find any help in
the knowledge base or anything.

The size of the file doesn't matter. I have created a new blank Word doc and
an empty password protected Excel file and I still get the same error.

I hope you can figure something out.

Thanks!

You might try using the DDE method, which was used by default in
Office 2000, instead of the OLE DB method, now used by default in
Office XP, to connect to your Excel data source.

In Word go to Tools/Options/General and turn on "Confirm conversions
at open". Then select your Excel data source again and when prompted
select the DDE method.

Thank you very much! That worked!

One more question. Even though it worked, it creates an
extra step for my end users. Is there any way to make it
just default to the DDE method or will I have to be prompted
to select DDE every time.

Thanks again. :)

You're welcome. Glad to hear it worked for you. :)

AFAIK the OLE DB method used by default can not be changed so it will
need to be selected each time. :-(

On the bright side I'm thankful there is a way *to* select another
method. In past versions there is a "Select Method" option in the
"Select Data Source" dialog box. The need to turn on "Confirm
conversions at open" in order to get the Select Method dialog to
prompt is certainly not as intuitive. (It took a bit to figure that
one out!)
