Can't move, delete or drag files from Open Window

When logged in as me, I cannot drag, delete, or otherwise move Word documents once they're saved in the Documents folder. When I login as my husband on the same computer, though, I am able to manipulate Word docs saved to the Documents folder.

Please help as I need to clean out and organize my documents!

Welcome to the Mac! This is how OS X works, and it's a significant
change from Windows. You can't do that in the File Open dialog, for any
program. You need to click on the blue face in the Dock to get you to
the Finder--it will automatically pop up a Finder window that shows you
your computer. Then you can move files, drag them to the trash, and
organize to your heart's content.

I suspect that you are actually in the Finder when you log in as your
husband.
