Can't move or delete messages in inbox - OL2000

When I try to delete/archive messages from my inbox, I get a message saying
"The messaging interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem
persists, restart Outlook".
Welllll... the problem certainly does persist! If I try to move messages
manually I get an error message saying "Can't move the items".
I've tried the inbox repair tool, with no effect. Problem only affects
messages older than last June, but my PST file is over 1gb now and i'd like
to trim it down by archiving.
